How to reduce your energy bills in the UK
The energy price cap is a limit on unit rates and standing charges for default tariffs. It is not a limit on your total bill, so the useful comparison starts with your own annual usage.

Compare the full annual estimate
Take annual gas and electricity use in kWh from a recent statement. Compare a fixed tariff's estimated annual cost, standing charges and exit fees with the current cap for your region.
Use the quarterly reset dates
Ofgem reviews the cap every three months. Check again around January, April, July and October, and submit meter readings when rates change so estimated usage is not split incorrectly.
Check support before arrears grow
Warm Home Discount, the Priority Services Register and supplier hardship schemes have separate rules. Ask your supplier what is open now rather than assuming support is automatic.
