How to cut your weekly grocery costs

A cheaper shop is built from the products your household buys repeatedly. Unit prices expose pack-size changes and make supermarket, brand and promotion comparisons fairer.

Build a repeat basket

Choose 10 to 15 products from recent receipts and record price per 100g, litre or item. Recheck the same lines when promotions and pack sizes change.

Swap one staple at a time

Start with cupboard ingredients, cleaning products and foods used inside meals. Keep only swaps your household accepts, because discarded food is not a saving.

Interrogate loyalty prices

Compare the loyalty price with the normal price and with an equivalent own-label item. The crossed-out number is less useful than the unit cost you actually pay.
