Council tax discounts and band challenges

Council tax bills are local, so there is no single national cheapest council. Start with discounts and reductions, then inspect your band only if comparable homes suggest it may be wrong.

Check reductions first

Single-person discount, student exemption, severe mental impairment rules, disability reduction and Council Tax Reduction can change the amount due without changing the property's band.

Compare genuinely similar homes

Use the official band checker and compare nearby properties of similar age, size, type and location. Historic valuation dates apply, so today's sale price is not enough on its own.

Challenge with care

A review can move a band up as well as down and can affect neighbouring homes. Formal rights may also depend on when you became responsible for the property.
