How to challenge your council tax band (and check discounts first)
Council tax bills are local, so there is no single national cheapest council. Start with discounts and reductions, then inspect your band only if comparable homes suggest it may be wrong.

Single-person discount, student exemption, severe mental impairment rules, disability reduction and Council Tax Reduction can change the amount due without changing the property's band.
Where is the council tax band checker?
In England and Wales, use the official GOV.UK 'check your council tax band' service. In Scotland, use the Scottish Assessors' site. Both are free, so never pay a company to check it for you.
How do I know if my band is wrong?
Compare nearby properties of similar age, size, type and location on the band checker. Historic valuation dates apply (1991 in England and Scotland, 2003 in Wales), so today's sale price is not enough on its own.
How do I challenge my council tax band?
Contact the Valuation Office Agency (or your local assessor in Scotland) with your evidence. A review can move a band up as well as down and can affect neighbouring homes. Formal rights may also depend on when you became responsible for the property.
