What can I claim on my visa? Benefits and your immigration status
What you can claim depends on your immigration status, not on how long you have lived here or how much tax you have paid. Many visas come with a 'no recourse to public funds' condition, which blocks most benefits — but not everything. Checking first matters, because a wrong claim can affect a future visa application.

What does 'no recourse to public funds' mean?
It is a condition attached to many visas, including most work, student and family routes. It means you cannot claim the benefits classed as public funds, such as Universal Credit, Housing Benefit and Child Benefit. It does not stop you using the NHS, sending children to state school, or getting free advice from charities.
What can I still get with no recourse to public funds?
Free debt and money advice, food banks, many council emergency schemes, Healthy Start in some cases, free school meals in some areas, and help from charities do not count as public funds. Rules differ by scheme and by nation, so ask the organisation directly — they check eligibility every day.
What if I have settled status, indefinite leave or refugee status?
People with indefinite leave to remain, settled status under the EU Settlement Scheme, or refugee status can usually claim benefits on the same basis as British citizens, subject to the normal income and residence rules. Use a free benefits calculator to check your exact position.
Can my condition be lifted?
If you are destitute or at risk of destitution, you can apply to the Home Office to have the no-recourse condition lifted on certain visas. This is called a 'change of conditions' application and it is free. Charities such as Citizens Advice can help you with the evidence.
Who can advise me?
Only take immigration advice from a solicitor or an adviser registered with the Immigration Advice Authority. Unregulated advice is illegal and often expensive. Citizens Advice, Migrant Help and the Joint Council for the Welfare of Immigrants all offer free, regulated help.
